The festival started as an idea of two resident couples in Henley on Klip, sharing common interests, but specializing in altogether different fields. They did share a dream though, to create an annual event in their beloved village, an event that would serve several diverse purposes: An increase of tourism for the village, an investment in the local business economy, raising funds for local charity, and bringing art and culture to the residents. Thus the Henley WAM festival was born.
WAM is an acronym for Wine, Arts, and Music. A weekend of great wine, quality music, and beautiful art. Arrangements began immediately with members of the Henley Rotary Club and the Henley Lions joining the committee. The Midvaal municipality agreed to sponsor the event and so the dream slowly started to become a reality.
The second Inaugural Henley WAM festival will begin on Saturday 7 September 2019, wine tasting will be available at various venues, with different vineyards at each venue. A grand concert the evening featuring an orchestra and various soloists will bring the official events of the day to a close, but visitors can enjoy dinner at a number of restaurants in the village.
Sunday 8 September 2019 will kick off with a classic car show, the wine tasting will continue, and a charity fun run/walk will take place at Fraser Park.
In accordance with the original idea of the organizers, the festivities will not be limited to a single location. Wine farms and exhibiting artists will be stationed at different restaurants and venues in Henley on Klip, the concert will take place at the AOG Hall in Regatta street, and the car show will be hosted at Fraser Park.
Festival-goers will purchase a branded wine glass with an instruction booklet which will contain all information, a map and some history of the area. Tickets for the concert are already available online, with canapés and refreshments included in the ticket price.
